WAR IS PEACE
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH
George Orwell's 1984 is a look into our futures. Maybe not our own, maybe generations after us. With the way things in life are going now, a world where everyone is brainwashed is sure to happen. Numerous amounts of people believe everything they hear on television; I know I believe some of the things I hear. People believe what they read in magazines and history books. Of course, shouldn't history books be correct if they are an account of the past written by reputable sources?
Oceania is a world where history was rewritten. The only past a person had was the past the Party told them they had. Memories, they always had their memories. For fear of being turned over to the ThoughtPolice or saying something out of the ordinary the characters in the book are forced to push out their memories.
They are forced to push out their wants, needs, habits. Chocolate rations are handed out, getting smaller and smaller each time. The Party tells everyone (and rewrites the past) chocolate rations have been raised thanks to the Party and everyone believes them. If a character didn't believe, well, they stopped being a character.
Winston was different though. When reading I thought Winston would be okay. A part of me thought "Winston is different he will be the change in Oceania."
Needless to say, this book surprised in so many good ways. If you have not read 1984 by George Orwell, read it. If you have read this book, read it again I am sure it's been long overdue.
